NiI2 is a layered two-dimensional magnetic material with exotic magnetism. The crystal structure consists of weakly coupled NiI2 monoliths interacting via weak van der Waals forces. Two-dimensional NiI2 sheets are promising two-dimensional intrinsic FM semiconductors. Their exfoliation energies are lower than those of graphene or MoS2, which means that monolayers are easily produced using exfoliation or polymer-assisted techniques. Like other nickel-based dichalcogenides, NiI2 monolayers exhibit a semiconducting band gap (theoretical) around 1.25 eV, very similar to the Si and GaAs ranges. The FM transition temperature of NiI2 has been predicted to be one of the highest temperatures Tc ~170K in the monolayer form. |
